FKA twigs Speaks Her Truth

Iconic artist FKA twigs has come forward with her experience dealing with and surviving abusive ex-partner Shia LaBeouf.

On Wednesday, February 17th FKA twigs tweeted, “thank you Elle Magazine for having me and creating space for this conversation.”

Earlier this year the artist filed a lawsuit against her ex-partner Shia LaBeouf accusing him of inflicting sexual battery, assault, and emotional distress throughout their relationship. This lawsuit made headlines. Up until then, there had been many problematic instances surfacing about the actor’s erratic behavior. In this case, many were quick to dismiss or defend it. The results were destructive.

Elle Magazine writer Marjon Carlos jumped on a video call with the artist while they were pent up in their respective quarantine spaces to talk through this emotional and scary time in twig’s life. The idea of recalling those troubling moments noted as “IPV - Intimate Partner Violence” was necessary for twigs because to her it was essential to end the cult of silence. She wanted readers to know that this type of abuse could happen to anyone at any time and no one should feel ashamed to talk about it or at least recognize the symptoms. The whole piece illustrates a defining moment in FKA twigs life when she started to realize that her boyfriend was erratic and dangerous. In her case, he was also famous and protected.

The interview gives the reader flashes of scary moments when LaBeouf would strangle her, threaten to crash an 80-mile car for her, scream at her for hours, and even make her sleep in the nude. She gets to a point where she is isolated from friends and family despite having her own means of escape, success, and financial stability. FKA twigs bravely shared her harrowing tale in the hope that people stuck in their homes with abusers can amass the strength to finally leave all that behind them and escape. For her, the pandemic was an eye-opener because she realized that now there were so many people actually trapped in a home with their abusers. It was a matter of saving as many people as she could. The entire interview is triggering but essential to understand the true depths of her situation and how she was able to overcome a severely abusive relationship. It is also a reminder that you never really know what people are going through.

Be sure to check out this incredibly brave testimony and share her story. She was brave enough to step forward and the least we can do is amplify her experience so that it becomes less of a taboo.
